Had a quick look at this 1m 5y Maiden Stakes. Tell a lie, I reviewed Broken Force, trained by Karl Burke. This chestnut gelding is a son of Broken Vow [pictured] & 60,000 euro purchase at the 2yo breeze-up sales.
I mention this twice-race three-year-old simply because he made his debut in the Convivial Maiden Stakes back in August 2017. Priced 66-1 he wasn't expected to show a great deal and it kind of went that way in the race. Twelfth of seventeen, beaten a dozen lengths, wasn't a disgrace because the Maiden is worth £43,000 and change. Crazy to think this race is worth more than many Group contests. It is a hot race race for very good reason. Who wouldn't be chomping at the bit for that wedge? Even Godolphin would be half excited by the prospect!
Perhaps Broken Force was entered with little hope or may be it was a sign Spiggot Lodge think this March foal has potential.
I had my eye on this gelding when racing second start over course and distance. Broken Force was a touch keen that day which didn't help and he finished a respectable 7th beaten just under four lengths.
So he makes a return in this competitive-looking race. Well, it looks a race where five or six horses have a fighting chance with plenty of rags
Three-year-olds on their third start. You know what I'm think? Getting ready for a handicap mark. Makes sense, hey?
I will watch the race with interest but not betting.
