Friday's 2YO Update (16th November)

Just to give people a freebie (because normally these posts are hidden until after the result) I will show one post every Friday, until the end of the year 2018.

Let's take a look at the significant horses going today. 

12:50 Lingfield - 

Difficult to know what to think about Orange Blossom. I have little doubt this chestnut filly has shown a high level of ability at home and reason why James Givens had her compete at pattern class. This daughter of Showcasing was dropped in class at Catterick last time out. Whether the soft(ish) ground didn't suit it is difficult to tell as it wasn't a particularly slow time. However, Orange Blossom was never travelling and ran pretty hopeless. She had the blinkers applied that day which have been removed. Were they the problem? It's a big question mark. Perhaps the all-weather surface will suit. At best, she has a leading chance but with a wide draw and so many unanswered questions you may be a brave soul to bet. I suspect, she will either win or be unplaced. Interested in seeing how this horse goes today because it is intriguing if not frustrating, too. 

Orange Blossom 9/2 5th 

Note: Another poor effort from Orange Blossom who has clearly regressed. Just shows how horses can go from talents to lesser lights all too quickly. 

7:45 Wolverhampton - 

James Park Wood is a decent two-year-old and well respected in the Beckett stable. This son of Australia was relatively fancied on debut but found himself in a very hot race (it was Group class). Stepping up to one mile second start, he did little wrong when losing by a head to a talented winner. Should go well although taking on a horse in Metatron who looked stunning on debut. Has to defy a win penalty.

Note: A disappointing effort. May have regressed.  

8:15 Wolverhampton - 

Readers may remember I noted Cadeau D'Amour because he was entered to run in the Brocklesby but wasn't seen until October! He didn't show any ability on debut and must have needed the run. However, there was a glimmer of hope next start at Nottingham when 66/1. It was a competitive enough race and this son of Camacho ran well in sixth, and given a relatively easy ride - pushed out hands and heels. There is always a fear that horses on their third start will be angled to nurseries. This factor may be a problem or not for this day. Isn't without a chance at 20/1 against a number of fancies who are racing for the first time. 

Cadeau D'Amour 33/1 7th 

Note: A big price and never really in contention. Looks like a nursery horse.  

Wednesday's 2YO Update (16 Races)

Sixteen two-year-olds in one day. Not my idea of fun. In fact, it fills me with horror. A long season and too much work. I tell you what, it's easier to read this page than write it! 

Thankfully, nine of these races are handicaps, which I will give a passing glance, before moving swiftly one. At times nursery races can make great bets. I will be paying more attention next season but it all depends on time. Too many race ''ALERT''. 

There aren't too many juveniles racing with significant entries. You would have got a list of names if there had been rather than my eloquent muse.

Oh, yes, I nearly forgot to say that most of the horses in yesterday's post flew like the wind. It shows the worth of this information because I didn't actually think about giving tips in any sense of the word - just writing notes and quick thoughts. 

1:30 Newmarket - 

Missed that Rainbow Heart had been given a listed entry. Wins very easily for William Haggas.

Note: Won impressively. 

2:35 Newmarket - 

Interesting to see Clive Cox has Eligible taking part over this 7f. This bay colt is a son of Dark Angle racing in the distinctive silks of A D Spence. He cost 130,000 guineas at the yearling sales (145,000 G, foal). There was little promise shown on debut. A slow start didn't help matters. Finished down the field in ninth. Eligible wasn't overly fancied in the betting that day so may be limited or perhaps more likely needed the experience. Hasn't raced for a month so there may have been an issue that day or taken time to strengthen up. Cox gave this colt a significant entry which suggests they have some hope. Certainly needs to take giant strides from that first start. 

Saeed bin Suroor has a few reasons to smile this two-year-old season. Light And Dark is one of ten or so horses to be noted by the handler. Beaten a few lengths on debut at Newmarket although that performance makes him look much worse. He put in a fine run and paid for it in the closing stages when tiring out of contention. Interesting to consider whether that was to do with distance or fitness. A drop back to 7f suggests the former. Not the greatest odds but looks the type to run well. 

Light And Dark 13/8f 3rd
Eligible 9/1 Unp

Note: Light And Dark was a touch keen early but looked to have most on the ropes but tired rapidly in the last 100m to finish third. Eligible was backed from 70/1 on the exchanges but showed nothing once again. 

4:55 Newmarket - 

I have little doubt James Park Woods has ability. We noted this son of Australia on debut. He was relatively fancied at 5/1. It turned out to be a very hot contest which must have irritated Beckett. Sure Quantum Leap Racing IV held hopes of touching the clouds. The form of that race has been franked with the first winning at Group 1, while the second looks to be a Group Horse. Beckett's charge chased leaders before fading in the closing stages. He was entered to run over a mile at Kempton but withdrawn with a vet's certificate. Interesting to see how this mile goes. Should be wiser for that first race. 

William Haggas has been sending out a lot of two-year-olds this back end of the season. Most are running well. Faylaq wasn't fancied on his debut at Newmarket when behind a couple of hot shots who went clear of the field. This son of Dubawi cost 1,500,000 Guineas so you would expect him to show more on this second start. It could well be the case he needed the run on debut or disappointed. Looks to be well found in the market suggesting there will be a few sparks flying today. 

Note: James Park Woods ran well but just denied by a head. Faylaq was well backed and looked to hold every chance but tired rapidly in closing stages in 5th.

Monday's 2YO Update

3:15 Bath - 

Just the one entrant here being Stan Moore's Delta Bravo. It is interesting that Moore entered this Irish-bred daughter of Mastercraftsman in a Class 2 stakes. To be fair this filly done little that day. It was a competitive affair with the winner, Fashion's Star, making a sparkling victory and detailed on our 10 Dark Horse Mailing. Delta Bravo is taking a marked step up in distance [1m 2f]. 

In truth, Moore has been very quiet this season with no two-year-olds of note. This doesn't help add to confidence. 

Interesting but I would take a watching brief unless you like a speculative punt. 

Dela Bravo 66/1 8th

6:15 Kempton - 

Spell has received a few significant entries over these months. This daughter of Slade Power ran well on debut when beaten by a neck into third and then fifth in a Listed race at York. Not seen for over 100 days. Well drawn. Needs to bet fit and without issues after such a long absence. 

Spell 9/2 5th

6:45 Kempton - 

Hugo Palmer hasn't had the best of seasons with his two-year-olds but Red October has been noted. This son of Dawn Approach ran well on debut at Auction class. The first two looked capable of that grade and left the third some way behind. By grade, this is a step up in class. From a statistical point of view has fair each-way claims.

7:15 Kempton - 

Ralph Beckett has been in great form with his juveniles this season. We detailed *James Park Woods before debut. This son of Australia was beaten well but that race looks very tough and been franked a number of times. Beaten over eight lengths back in fifth. Stepping up in distance. A decent draw. Beckett does well at the course and looks the type to go well. The tongue tie has been applied for the first time.
